Nepal Flash Floods: Medical Teams Deploy to Emergency Zone

Health workers from Dhulikhel Hospital are moving beyond the hospital's walls this week, carrying emergency care directly into flood-hit communities across Nepal. A wall of water and debris tore through northern Nepal and southern Tibet on Aug. 26, an event responders believe was set off by a glacial lake breaking open.

More than 380 people have been confirmed dead so far, with over 1,400 still unaccounted for, among them visitors from more than twenty countries, including the United States.

With search-and-rescue work still underway and many neighborhoods cut off by damaged roads and bridges, Dhulikhel Hospital sent medical staff out on Thursday carrying field medic kits and emergency supplies contributed by Direct Relief. The hospital is also readying beds for patients being evacuated from the hardest-hit areas.

The 475-bed hospital, based in Dhulikhel east of the capital Kathmandu, has been a Direct Relief partner for years and has taken in more than $2.5 million worth of medical support since April 2026 — aid it is now pushing back out into flooded communities nearby.

Emergency Medical Response Operations Expand in Northern Nepal

A second medical group, Mountain Heart Nepal, deployed into the north of the country this week with Direct Relief's backing. The organization, which links medical care and outreach to some of the country's hardest-to-reach regions, is receiving an emergency operating grant to send teams into flood-affected communities, stocked with field medic packs Direct Relief had already positioned nearby.

Direct Relief is preparing further emergency shipments from its medical inventory for local partner organizations, working alongside Nepal's Ministry of Health and area hospitals to move urgently needed supplies quickly.

Beyond the immediate search-and-rescue and trauma needs, health officials expect a rise in displacement, shortages of clean water and sanitation, and damaged roads that keep people from reaching functioning clinics.

Direct Relief's Long-Term Commitment and Humanitarian Impact in Nepal

Direct Relief's involvement in Nepal goes back years, including the country's devastating 2015 earthquake, which killed roughly 9,000 people and badly damaged health infrastructure.

Since 2009, the organization has delivered more than $119 million in medical aid to Nepal through 48 partner organizations — 206 shipments, over 638,000 pounds of supplies, and nearly 35 million defined daily doses of medicine, including a $287,000 shipment of diabetes and cancer medication that arrived earlier this month, just before the floods struck.
